A Bit of Good News

Yesterday I got a bit of good news for a change. I was depressed after coming back from vacation, and dreading opening my e-mail or snail mail. I could not seem to get back into the swing of things. I had been expecting a check from one of my clients and of course, it had not shown up. I was starting to wonder if she did not intend to pay the bill. I was dreading dealing with that. Hell, I was dreading doing pretty much anything at all, but I sat down and forced myself to start doing some work anyway.

At about 2 pm, I got a call from our insurance agent. We have been approved for a group plan with Highmark Blue Shield, which was great news. I never imagined that it would be as difficult or expensive as it has been to get insurance as a small business owner. Most companies want you to have full-time employees before you can be considered for a group plan. Other types of plans require you to be medically underwritten (a real pain) and also exclude many pre-existing conditions... which makes you wonder why would you want to have the plans at all? Anyway, Highmark seems to understand the mom and pop shop concept, and the fact that a lot of times a spouse puts a lot of time into a business that they do not get paid for. Therefore, I was able to list Jason as an unpaid employee who spends at least 20 hours a week doing stuff for me. He does currently help with mailings, paying bills, digital photography, and various other things.

When I informed Jason that he was now my employee, he asked for a raise and threatened to go on strike. **sigh** It's hard to find good help these days. I told him that he better get into the company uniform, which for males, is a Speedo. Needless to say, he's joined the ranks of disgruntled employees. Oh well.

My second piece of good news was that my client called and said that she was going to be a little late paying the bill, but did intend to pay. She thought she might also have a lead on some more web design for me. Hooray! I hope that pans out.
