New Book

The recent comment from Oroblanco reminded me that I've been meaning to blog about the new book to which he is a contributor. It's called Underground! : The Disinformation Guide to Ancient Civilizations, Astonishing Archaeology and Hidden History. If you like history and ancient mysteries/civilizations, then this book is for you. If you want a regurgitation of what is widely accepted as "history" then you will probably not like it. It is chock full of alternative theories about ancient civilizations, their technologies and origins. Some of the ideas are a bit on the fringe, but for the most part it is very scholarly and backed up by serious scientific research. Keep in mind that at one time, you were on the fringe if you said the earth was round. I'm enjoying the book immensely, and have provided a link (on the left) just in case the whole 2 or 3 of you that read this blog may actually want to purchase it.

Oroblanco's contribution is about ancient Carthage, a subject which has been close to his heart for quite some time. He has blogged quite a bit about the subject at Oroblanco's Cabin. I hope you'll visit his blog sometime and pick up a copy of the book. I understand that he's also working on a novel about Carthage. I'm looking forward to hearing more about that.

Happy reading!

Osama Bin Laden Nearly Messed up my Plans

I am in Atlanta for a seminar at the CNN Omni Center. This place is incredible. My room looks down into the atrium, and it's the place to be if you're a people watcher. Check out pics of the hotel here. http://www.omnihotels.com/FindAHotel/AtlantaCNNCenter.aspx

Anyway, one of the girls I went to school with works for CNN, so I met up with her for lunch and she offered me a tour of the newsroom, etc. It was very exciting. However, Osama bin Laden decided to release his tape today, so we weren't sure if we were going to get to go into the studio because CNN was on live at the time. I did manage to get a tour, which was extremely interesting. I got to see where they scan tapes for sound bytes, the production room where they had feeds queued up, and the studio itself. Daryn Kagan was in the studio while I was there.
http://www.cnn.com/CNN/anchors_reporters/kagan.daryn.html. Kyra Phillips was in the newsroom as well. I think her show starts at 1 pm est. http://www.cnn.com/CNN/anchors_reporters/phillips.kyra.html. While I was in the studio, they were receving a live feed from the White House. The seminar I am at is very interesting, but the CNN tour has to be the highlight of my trip.

Happy New Year and Goodbye Dick Clark

New Year's Eve always makes me feel a little sad. It reminds me that I'm another year older and time is marching on. Another year down the tubes and another 3 months of winter and shitty weather to look forward to. I've got to say that I am not sorry to see 2005 go. With all of the natural disasters, the war in Iraq, the stinking economy, etc., it hasn't been a great year. I don't know about the rest of you (the whole 1 or two of you that read this), but I am ready for a change.

This New Year's "celebration" was exceptionally sad because it was Dick Clark's last. He was one of those people who seemed ageless, and since his stroke time seems to have caught up with him. He was difficult to understand at times, and it was hard for me to watch, not so much because I felt sorry for him, because he's not the first person to experience a stroke and certainly won't be the last. It also seems as though he's had a pretty good gig all these years. No, I guess it just reminded me of my own mortality and the fact that none of us are invincible. It also marked the end of an era. Dick said he'd been doing this for 34 years, which means I've never experienced a New Year's Eve without Dick Clark.

So, Happy New Year all. Goodbye 2005. Farewell Dick Clark! Welcome 2006. Here's hoping for a good year for everyone.
