It may seem silly to mourn someone you've never met in person, but the fact of the matter is that this guy was in our living room in the past four years far more than all of our friends and relatives put together. Addison is a lover of all things many-legged or no-legged. In fact, the more teeth and legs a creature has, the better, as far as he is concerned. Addison is a big fan of the Crocodile Hunter, as well as Rudd Kleinpaste of Buggin with Rudd, and Steve Corwin of Corwin's Quest. All of these folks taught us the importance of protecting our environment and not fearing predators, who have an important job to do.
Steve Irwin taught millions what we've been saying to friends and relatives for years, "don't kill your predators!" People piss and moan about how their gardens are overrun by rodents and deer. Well, duh, maybe that's because we've exterminated the predators who would've kept them in check! These same people will then go out and chop a black snake to bits because they are scared of it, not realizing that in doing so, they are interfering with nature's delicate balance. Clearly the world needs more people like Steve Irwin.
Thanks to people like Irwin, I am glad to say that Addison has a deep love of all creatures, especially those who are not considered cute and cuddly by most of us. He is able to see the beauty in spiders, snakes and crocodiles and understands their place in the food chain. I am proud to say that we never intentionally squish spiders and snakes around the house... although we do gently relocate some of the creepy crawlies that make their way into our house! I have often observed Addison out in the yard, oblivious to my presence, turning over rocks and doing his own little version of an Animal Planet show.
We have been watching the memorial service and showings of Steve's past shows and I am sorry to say that I don't think I ever fully appreciated the type of person he was until now. He was passionate, enthusiastic, and loved life. He was wide open, never seemed fake, and he described himself as being "flat out like a lizard drinking." We will miss the Crocodile Hunter.
I have no fear of losing my life - if I have to save a koala or a crocodile or a kangaroo or a snake, mate, I will save it. ~Steve Irwin

Steve Irwin - Stevo
You wrote alot of what I have been thinking. I don't have the excuse of small children to have watched the Crocodile Hunter, but I always watched him just the same. I am in tears (still) as I write this. It feels like I have lost a member of my family, even though, like most, I have never met the man personally. It feels like I knew him.
I watched his memorial service twice, and cried through the whole thing both times. As I watched the clips of Steve, I realized some of the things that endeared him to millions. You always knew that it wasn't an act. You could always look into those eyes, as he was speaking, and you KNEW that he was utterly passionate about what he was doing. I knew he always put his money and his heart into what he believed in - from crocs to family. And he never cared if you saw the soft side of him, I always thought that when it came to Steve, "what you see is what you get." More than 80% of his (and Terri's) income was re-invested in their passion of caring for animals, keeping only what they needed to live. Terri still has their 1976 Toyota that they drove around for themselves.
I heard "Wes" saying that it was like he knew that there was alot to do, and not much time to get it done. I pray that his death does not stop the fantastic work is was doing.
I beg those people that I read about the other day who were cutting off the tails of stingrays, to PLEASE, realize that is exactly the opposite of what Steve would have wanted. I can just hear him now.
My son, Serafin, was brought to tears, having to tell his son, my grandson, that his favorite hero was no longer on this earth. My grandson has everything the Croc Hunter ever did on tape, and my son wanted to tell him before he heard it on the television. Which was the headline news story, IN GERMANY.
There are so few non-military heroes in our lifetime, but Steve, he, in my humble opinion, is definitely in the dictionary under the definitions of "Hero".
"CRIKEY"
"DID YOU SEE THAT?"
"DANGER DANGER"
And one more time -- for Steve Irwin
the Crocodile Hunter,
"CROCS RULE'
